从文革时期开始，徐冰就以自刻字的方式，开始制作无人能看懂的方块字。历时四年，1987年完成。他一共制作了4000多个新的“汉字”，并且用这些字印成了《析世鉴》（又称《天书》），总共由连续的宣纸和大张的挂幅，以及1200册线装书组成。所有的文字按照宋式排版方式制作而成。 1997年徐冰又发明了英文书法，将26个字母化作常见的字符，最终变成一个成行的表达方式。这次和“天书”不一样的是，徐冰的英文书法是真正可以用于书写的文字。
